Third Intermission – More About Me –Army Service

My army service turned out to be much longer than I had anticipated, and very unusual.

My motivation for the service was very high and I was prepared to serve for the 5 years, in accordance with the academic reserve contract: studying first, serving as an academic officer in a field related to my academic studies, but serving longer.

At that time the agreement was for 5 years.

I was very lucky to get into the mythological Unit 8200.

Unit 8200 is the SIGINT division of the Israeli Intelligence. SIGINT stands for Signal Intelligence.

Once it used to be quite secret, but for the past years it is famous for its extraordinary performance, innovation and high quality. Numerous world-class start-ups, some of which grew to be large international enterprises, some acquired by giants, were founded by alumni of this unit.

A well-known example is CheckPoint, which invented and brought to the world the firewall, but there are many others.

Initially I established a small research department for ELINT (Electronic Intelligence), dealing with electromagnetic signals and waves. I was amazed how much information can be carried through an electromagnetic signal and an electromagnetic wave!
